DESCRIPTION:*this event was canceled*\n\nHow does waste mediate social and
political life?\n\nSophia Stamatopoulou-Robbins traces Palestinians’ experi
ences of waste in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Associate Professor of An
thropology Sophia Stamatopoulou-Robbins at Bard College talk offers an anal
ysis unusual in the study of Palestine: it begins with the environmental\,
infrastructural\, and aesthetic context in which Palestinians forge their l
ives. She describes how what she calls a “waste siege” was part of a moment
of stabilization under occupation in the post-Oslo period\, contributing t
o a sense of indeterminacy around responsibility for the burdensome objects
and arrangements of daily life. She asks: What can waste management in the
absence of a state tell us about twenty-first-century conditions of settle
r colonialism\, and how can an investigation of infrastructure help us unde
rstand Gaza and Palestine more broadly in the present moment?\n\nThe George
Pierre Castile Anthropology Endowment sponsors this talk with the Anthropo
logy Department\, Asian Middle Eastern Studies\, the Environmental Studies
Program\, and the Global Studies Program.
