Dr. Juan Carlos de Obeso, currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Utah, will talk about his research demonstrating the potential for carbon sequestration from basalt. Basalts are the world’s most common igneous rock and dominate the local landscapes of Walla Walla. The primary minerals composing basalt are calcium-rich; calcium has the ability to react with carbon dioxide to form carbonates. This talk will cover the experimental results for the speed in which calcium can become available for carbon sequestration and the potential for this process to be a sink for anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions.
