#Ryusuke Hamaguchi's film
View map

In this lecture, sponsored by the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies department, Philip Kaffen, Associate Professor of Japanese Cinema at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, will discuss Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s newest work, Evil Does Not Exist (2024).

The title is well-chosen—emblematic of the film itself. Initially, it appears straightforward. But once we begin to pick at it, its mysteries deepen, and our initial confidence dissolves. The story revolves around a conflict between a rural village outside Tokyo and a real-estate company that seeks to build a glamping site in the village. The set-up suggests obvious oppositions and related concerns—rural/urban divides, environmentalism, class, and privilege. But as we come to see, things are not so clear-cut. Dr. Kaffen’s talk will focus on the role of interruption in the film, paying close attention to sound and image, as well as editing. This focus can help illuminate the film’s beguiling mix of simplicity and mystery, between everyday life and evil.
