What does it mean to be Native Hawaiian on other Native people's homelands? Is there any way to fulfill our kuleana (our responsibilities) to the land we are on, to Native people whose lands we are on, to Hawaiʻi, to elders and ancestors, to children? This talk cannot dare to answer all these questions, but it will look at the lives of kūpuna (elders and ancestors) who moved from Hawaiʻi to Turtle Island (North America) and see how they tried to live in a way that was pono (right and good and balanced). What can we learn from them about how to be pono in diaspora? This talk will speak from a Native Hawaiian perspective, but hopefully anyone living in diaspora can learn from the experiences of these kūpuna.
