"The Tale of the Sarnia Nose: A Comic Book Story of Chemical Intimacy and Toxic Politics"
This performative lecturetakes the form of a comic book tour of Chemical Valley, a vast industrial corridor in southwestern Ontario that constitutes one of the biggest concentrations of oil production in North America. Central to this
toxic story is the small town-nation of Aamjiwnaang, a First Nation of approximately 850 people. Aamjiwnaang is surrounded by giant petrochemical plants, exposing the Ojibwa community to a constant barrage of emissions. “The Tale of the Sarnia Nose” is a story of capitalism, pollution and sorcery. It provides a colorful and emotional account of the policies and practices that are deployed in Chemical Valley and the everyday violence of petroleum.
