Modern (and easily demonizable) Ahabs from Japan to Iceland -- to indigenous Macah right here in the state of Washington—are hardly the biggest threats to the future of whales today. The rest of us consumers are. That shift from obvious to invisible cetacean risks makes the work of rebuilding populations of the world's largest animals far more complex. Fortunately, the combination of emerging science, blockchain technology, and a new transparent market approach could yield positive outcomes for humans, whales and the oceans and climate that inextricably binds us.
