This talk will be a summary of Marichal’s forthcoming book (Intellect Books/University of Chicago Press) that explores how algorithms/AI have changed the nature of liberalism away from a purely individual-centered neoliberalism towards a machine liberalism driven by the need for belonging and security in an increasingly chaotic world. The main feature of this era is ontological enclosure, or the desire to construct a world where one's worldview is experienced as a form of property that needs to be protected from challenging and uncomfortable counternarratives. This liberalism does not replace neoliberalism, but sits alongside it as a new form of liberalism that helps resolve legitimation crises brought about by unrestrained capitalist accumulation.
