Ian Barrow, Middlebury, "The East India Company: From Merchant to Colonial State, 1600-1858"
Ian Barrow (Professor of History at Middlebury College) will discuss how and why the English East India Company transitioned from being a maritime trading enterprise, primarily preoccupied with the purchase and sale of spices and cotton textiles, to becoming a territorial colonial state in India. The talk will make extensive use of maps and images currently on display in the Maxey Museum’s exhibition, “Mapping India: Colonialism, Nationalism, and the Partition of South Asia.”
