Whitman College

Health Speaker Series | Doug McNeel, MD-Ph.D.

Dr. Douglas McNeel, MD-PhD is a ’86 graduate of Whitman College (Music & Chemistry) and is a tenured Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a genitourinary medical oncologist with a laboratory and clinical research program focused on prostate cancer immunology. The goal of these efforts has been to develop effective immune-based treatments for prostate cancer, and he has focused on this area for over 20 years. His lab has specifically focused on plasmid DNA genetic vaccines as a means of antigen delivery, methods to increase the immunogenicity of DNA vaccines, and understanding the mechanisms of tumor resistance to anti-tumor immunization. This research is translational in nature and has taken results from the laboratory to clinical testing in eight separate clinical trials, and then back again to the laboratory. Dr. McNeel has trained over 50 post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students in laboratory research, and has been the principal investigator for dozens of clinical trials, primarily focused on prostate cancer. This work has led to the publication of over 100 scientific articles, 16 issued patents, and a spin-out company (Madison Vaccines, Inc.), all focused on the clinical development of prostate cancer vaccine therapies. He served as co-leader of the Experimental Therapeutics Program of the UWCCC and is currently the Director for Solid Tumor Immunology Research. Dr. McNeel is a member of multiple professional societies, and has served on numerous grant review panels, including service on the NIH Board of Scientific Counselors. He also serves on multiple editorial boards (including section editor for the Journal of ImmunoTherapy of Cancer) and was most recently on the Board of Directors of the Society for the Immunotherapy of Cancer, the leading professional society focused on cancer immunotherapy.
