Spokane Ensemble Theatre is presenting According to Coyote by John Kauffman, in partnership with Whitman College. The event will take place in Harper Joy Theatre (Alexander Stage) on November 9 at 7:00 p.m. This production, featuring Coyote, the legendary hero of American Indian mythology, is an encounter with the richness and vitality of Native American culture using age-old traditions of music, dance, and theatre. Directed by the playwright’s niece, Josephine Keefe, and performed by Nez Perce actor, Kellen Trenal, this one-man show is a testament to storytelling and family history.

With Josephine's strong Nez Perce family legacy, she always knew in her heart that someday she would be part of this story, just as her Uncle John and her Aunt Carlotta were when they toured the show throughout the Pacific Northwest and all the way to the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. After the emotional and creatively depleting years of the pandemic, Josephine found herself questioning what kind of stories she wanted to tell in a post-pandemic world. Those questions led to a decision that now is the time to return to how ancestors shared stories and how she first learned about the stories from the Nez Perce Tribe.

This beautiful mono-dramatic presentation of According To Coyote is an immersive hour of creative storytelling that teaches so many lessons, not only from the story itself but also from the deep familial roots of its creators. The connection to community, family, and the realization that all of us are still learning from our mistakes just like Coyote does is at the core of this story.

We invite you to join us in an encounter with the richness and vitality of Native American culture using age-old traditions of music, dance, and theatre. Broaden your imagination with this Nez Perce origin tale and enjoy a vibrant and entertaining anthology of tales featuring the legendary hero of  Native American mythology, Coyote.

This event is free and open to the public. It is appropriate for all ages. No tickets are needed. Seating is on a first come first serve basis. Contact Jeanine Gordon, Special Assistant to the President for Native American Outreach, at gordonj@whitman.edu for further questions.
