Academic Freedom & Collective Action

Risa L. Lieberwitz, Professor of Labor and Employment Law, Cornell University. General Counsel, American Association of University Professors.

Academic Freedom is central to faculty work, covering a borad scope of teaching, research, public speech, and participation in college and university governance. Her presentation will analyze the internal and external forces, particularly since the 1980s trends of university "corporatization", which have weakend these foundations and have undermined the exercise of academic freedom. Just as faculty gained academic freedom through collective demands more than 100 years ago, collective action is the only way to regain the full scope of academic freedom today.
