In this clinic, you will learn the basics of lead climbing and associated safety considerations. You will also learn the more complicated technique of belaying a lead climber on both an ATC and Gri Gri. You will mock-lead (on top rope) at least six times and practice lead-belaying at least five times. You will also practice taking and catching lead falls. (You must have already passed the top rope climb/belay proficiency test to take this clinic)Students: $25Community: $25 + Entrance Fee To pay for the clinic, please see the front desk upon arrival and let them know you're there for the clinic during the check-in process. Lecture description: Americans used to believe that much of the world was populated by “heathens.” This talk asks what that view of the world entailed and shows its continuing repercussions on American ideas about race as a “heathen inheritance.”
About the speaker: Kathryn Gin Lum is Professor and Chair of Religious Studies in collaboration with the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and History (by courtesy) at Stanford University, where she also directs the American Religions in a Global Context Initiative.

Australia hosts the world’s oldest continuing culture, and Aboriginal rock art represents one of its most significant records of knowledge. These paintings and engravings remain of deep importance to Aboriginal people today and provide valuable evidence for researchers seeking to understand long-term human-environment interactions. Yet one of the greatest challenges in rock art research is determining age. Without knowing how old the paintings and engravings are, it is difficult to understand how the artworks relate to past changes in climate, environment, or culture. In this talk, Dr. Helen Green will outline the latest scientific techniques used to establish the age of Australia’s oldest rock art, and the innovative, multi-disciplinary projects that bring together traditional Indigenous knowledge and Western science to deepen our understanding of these remarkable cultural records and how we might protect them into the future.

Estelle Freedman (History, Stanford, emerit) and Christie Herring (filmmaker) are joining the Whitman and Walla Walla communities for an evening viewing of the documentary film they produced and directed for PBS, Singing for Justice. The film explores the personal, political, and musical journeys of Faith Petric (1915-2012), a Whitman alum (1937), in the contexts of the social movements she championed. It has been enthusiastically received both for its broad historical contributions and as a timely reminder of the long history of struggles for social justice. The film viewing will be followed by a Q&A session with both co-directors. The Q&A session will be followed by a protest song sing-along led by Estelle Freedman.

Brents, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Brents is a foremost expert in sex work in the United States and abroad. This talk will discuss her most recent work analyzing the experiences of sex workers who have been harmed while providing sexual services. Brents and her team of international collaborators examined how legal structures changed the perceptions of sex workers about their victimization, using Aotearoa/New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States as examples of legalized, partially criminalized, and fully criminalized national contexts. Come learn what the team learned about how law changes the perceptions of victimization in sex work!

His newest poetry collection, The Fears (Copper Canyon Press, 2023) received the 2024 Rilke Prize. His new novel Sleepaway (Acre Books, 2024) was declared a "small press gem" by the Los Angeles Times. He is also the author of several other books of poetry, including The Art of Fiction (2021), How He Loved Them (2018), Churches (2014), In a Beautiful Country (2011) and National Anthem (2008), all from Four Way Books. He has edited several volumes of poetry, including New European Poets (Graywolf Press, 2008; w/ Wayne Miller), Literary Publishing in the 21st Century (Milkweed Editions, 2016; w/ Wayne Miller & Travis Kurowski), and Into English: Poems, Translations, Commentaries (Graywolf Press, 2017; w/Martha Collins). With Wayne Miller and Martin Rock, Prufer directs the Unsung Masters Series, a book series devoted to bringing the work of great but little known authors to new generations of readers through the annual republication of a large body of each author’s work, printed alongside essays, photographs and ephemera.

Prufer is a professor in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Houston and the low-residency MFA at Lesley University. Among Prufer’s awards and honors are five Pushcart prizes and several Best American Poetry selections, numerous awards from the Poetry Society of America, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Lannan Foundation. His poetry collection How He Loved Them was long-listed for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize and received the Julie Suk Award for the best poetry book of 2018 from the American literary press. Born in 1969 in Cleveland, Ohio, Kevin Prufer studied at Wesleyan University (BA), Hollins College (MA) and Washington University (MFA).

The first portion will cover all the basics you need to know to set bouldering routes at the Whitman Climbing Center. The last portion will teach the special systems and safety considerations necessary for vertical route setting. If you have already taken the boulder route setting clinic, you can just come for the vertical route setting portion, or if you just want to learn to set bouldering problems, you can leave early. You must also pass a vertical systems proficiency test at the end of the vertical route setters clinic to do any roped systems work at the Climbing Center. The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship program offers college graduates of unusual promise a year of independent, purposeful exploration, and travel outside of the United States to enhance their capacity for resourcefulness, imagination, openness, and leadership, and to foster humane and effective participation in the world community.

ALL are welcome to attend. Although only rising seniors may apply for the Fall 2026 cycle, brainstorming, preparation, and planning that begins over a year in advance of application is highly recommended and encouraged.

The development of plantation slavery radically transformed societies and environments in the Americas. In this talk, Dunnavant will delve into the colonial practice of coral mining and its environmental impacts in the Danish West Indies. Drawing from archaeological, historical, and environmental data, Dunnavant reveals how the use of coral as the dominant construction material for colonial buildings left a lasting legacy on the landscape and seascape that is still evident today on the island of St. Croix.

She is co-author, with Kathryn Nuernberger, of Advanced Poetry: A Writer’s Guide and Anthology (Bloomsbury Literary, 2024), and co-editor, with Sharma Shields, of the multi-genre anthology Evergreen: Grim Tales and Verses from the Gloomy Northwest (Scablands Books, 2021). Zeller’s prose appears in The Rumpus, Diagram, Brevity, Bellingham Review, Booth Journal, and in several anthologies, including the NY-Times bestselling This is the Place: Women Writing About Home (Seal Press, 2017) and the forthcoming Environmental and Nature Writing (Bloomsbury 2025). Additionally, her essay “Scavenger Panorama” was selected by Vivian Gornick as a Notable in Best American Essays 2023. Recipient of a Promise Award from the Sustainable Arts Foundation, a Fellowship from Artist Trust, and a Residencies in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest and Centrum’s Port Townsend Campus at Fort Worden, Zeller has presented her work internationally at the University of Oxford (where she was a fellow in Spring 2024, as well as a visiting poet in Spring 2019) and in Madrid at the Unamuno Author Festival. She is Professor of English for Central Washington University, and Affiliate Faculty in Poetry and Nature Writing for Western Colorado’s low-residency MFA.

A masterpiece of magical realism, this independent-film (written and directed by Alice Rohrwacher) will take us on a journey through multiple afterlives... the ancient erupting through the modern.

The fable follows a rumpled English archaeologist named Arthur, and his merry, wayward crew of tombaroli -- who survive by looting ancient-Etruscan tombs. Yet there are larger quests involved. They are at once mythic, illusory, and unobtainable, and they bring into collision the worlds of antiquities-trafficking, the priceless-priced, and the search for lost love.

There will be an informal reception with popcorn, cookies, and non-alcoholic beverages at 5:30pm. The film will begin at 6pm and will be followed by another opportunity to mingle and converse.

It is a special occasion to honor the current graduating class while providing a space for fellow graduates, families, and friends to take a moment to reflect on the strengths they have developed and the obstacles they have overcome during their time at Whitman.
