Plant inventory of the Blue Mountains and the role of citizen scientists
Mark Darrach, botanist for the Umatilla National Forest, is featured. Mark Darrach, MS, is a geologist and botanist with years of technical experience in plant taxonomy and plant ecology research in the Pacific Northwest and the western United States. Darrach joined the Forest Service full-time in 2009. He lives in Pendleton eight months a year where his 'office' is a 1.4 million acre wood. Mark has a particular interest in lomatiums and, in the last couple of years, working with volunteers and Rare Care staff, has been instrumental in identifying 2 new phlox species. Over 1500 diverse and rare plant species have been inventoried in the Blues. Mark believes volunteers or 'citizen scientists' have an important role in protecting this botanical legacy.
