Hosokawa Lecture: Is the First Amendment the New Second Amendment? Calling Hate Speech Free Speech and Getting Away With It

This year's Hosokawa speaker is writer and journalism professor David Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler earned his Ph.D. in 2015 from the University of Kentucky and currently serves as an assistant professor of journalism at the University of Tampa. He is a freelance writer for CNN, The AtlanticThe WeekThe Chronicle of Higher Education, The New Republic and The New York Times, and has been a guest on BBC Newsday. His Atlantic article "Do Students Still Have Free Speech in School?" is required reading at Harvard's Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. As both a journalist and an academic, he enjoys writing about culture, politics and technology, covering subjects ranging from Silicon Valley's hiring practices to the Scottish independence referendum.
